Oxford

Oxford in the spring is also becoming more of a solid plan. Most of the forms are in now, and i am planning out my schedule while i'm there, which, of course sounds much more tedious than Italy. haha. However Craig and I have made plans to stay with the english aunt of a friend of ours. A retired illustration commissioner, she lives in a little village north of Oxford where there is literally only 200 people. It will be a nice reprieve from the head down workload we will be getting in Oxford. Our one other semi-plan is to take the ferry over to the coast of Ireland, where we have friends from the U.S. staying. The classes at oxford sound work intensive but worth it... and from what i've heard from students who have been there in the past, they are.

here are the course descriptions of the classes i will be taking:

"Renaissance to Enlightenment
There are fortnightly lectures during the first ten weeks of term which trace the breakdown of the medieval world view and the emergence of the Renaissance. These prepare students for colloquium, and for the lectures and field trips during the final four weeks of semester. We consider the contribution of Renaissance artists, scholars and humanists whose ideas inaugurated a new era of European civilization. Attention turns next to the impact of the Reformation on European society, philosophy, religion and culture, and to the revolutionary changes that ensued in England in the seventeenth century. Finally, we look at the ‘Augustan Age’, that period of new stability, discovery and expansion that profoundly influenced the shape of the modern world. Lectures are supplemented by colloquium sessions and field trips, and the course is assessed by an examination and an essay."

" Drawing in the Museums
This course draws its central inspiration from the view that the process of learning to see and draw begins by studying the art and artefacts of the past. Linked to this strategic interpretation of learning how to ‘see’ is the important historical record which shows how the surviving artefacts of a culture provide evidence of the ways in which that culture understood the world. Students are taught practical drawing and watercolour painting skills and acquire an art-historical grounding through visits to art and natural history museums in Oxford, an experience that culminates in a portfolio of artworks and writing investigating the connections between art and the wider ideas of a culture. No previous experience with art is required. The course brings out the importance of the relationship between art and ideas, and the connection between theory and methodology. "

"Poetry.
For those wanting to write poetry, concentrating on the production of poetry in as many traditional metres and forms as possible. "

"Art of the Garden.
This course studies the history of gardens and parks in Europe from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century. Topics include: castle gardens, monasteries and colleges; Physick and Botanic gardens; the formal park; the classical style of the 18th century; the English tradition of Brown and Rept"

Things to look forward to about the UK:
ACCENTS
Gardens
Big Ben
OXFORD
good beer
New museums

recently

ahh it was nice to get some art up on my blog, since i've been working on it so much lately but haven't actually put anything up for anyone to look at. i may post more later, but we'll see if i have time.

In recent news, i am in desperate need of a haircut. But not as desperate need as craig is, since he is going to italy in a week and a half, and looks like he has a mop on his head. a cute mop. I also look like i have a mop on my head but i'm not going to italy for another four months-ish.

I have finished all the work for my IVT class! And hopefully i will keep my A average and be exempt from my Psych final. Which would mean... only three more classes to worry about!

Intro drawing i have an india ink sketch of sub atomic particles i'm working on. In Lit History I have to do some catch up reading to be prepared for the final, and in Studies of Lit i have to finish my research paper on ESL and get a portfolio together. Things are finally winding down.

Obviously this was the opportune time for my printer to run out of ink!

haha

but the weather has been nice, and its hard to remember the days when it rained non-stop with horrible winds. so thats a pleasant thought, even though i haven't been able to take much advantage of the outdoors lately.

In terms of summer classes, nearly everything is settled, all my classes are scheduled to happen, and i will most likely be living on campus. and taking a 12 credit load, with the possibility of sneaking some time out of my busy schedule to go watch the outdoor summer concerts on friday nights with craig (once he gets back from Italy).
Summer classes: Text and the Photograph, Painting Fieldscapes, Educational Psychology

Next year, well this year really, Alba is becoming more of a reality to plan for, than a distant possibility. All thats left to do is, buy plane tickets, get my visa, and pack! (not to mention save up some cash)
I will be taking: Italian, Film Studdies, Religion, and Poly Sci (unless i can get my photography independent study to pass by some god sent miracle, in which case i will be taking that in place of Poly Sci!!)

Things I am excited about for Alba:
The truffle festival
photography opportunities
Traveling
Colorful buildings
Gondolas
fabulous food and wine
Learning Italian
Live music every night!
Becoming a better artist

NOTE: my phone recently stopped working and im unsure why?
I was talking to my dad, and it turned off, due to lack of battery and now that it has been charged it refuses to turn on.
craig is taking me to the Verizon store tomorrow.

Speaking of Craig, C-men are performing tonight and tomorrow night, craig has two pretty extensive solos, he is going to be famous soon. smile.

Zine

This is a zine i made for my Intro to Visual thinking class! Its about the frosted elfin, a local butterfly who is going extinct due to the spraying of pesticides (to discourage gypsy moths) and the loss of habitat due to urban development. all original illustrations... and of course original text.

I hand published 50 of these and will be distributing them on May 4 around 12:30...

other recent art

Mixed media Tree
I did this a while ago, its a worms eye view of a tree... watercolor and india ink

sailboat book

These are a few of several images which were part of one of my recent art projects, a handmade book about sailboats.it's more of an in-person thing i suppose, its a very tangible book, and the pictures don't do it justice. I'm actually pretty proud of this book, as it has sparked my interest in print making and book arts, both topics i hope to pursue with my capstone project.

and guess what? our school didn't even send out an email. we were told about the warning from friends.
goes to show you how great our school administration is. way to not tell us we are getting hit by a tornado.

drisly Sunday afternoon pick up

Here is another list of things i love...

Its a little travel wallet. I thought it would be useful, but craig says it will make it easier for the robbers at the airports and train stations. I still think its cute. its made by downstairsdesigns.

These next three photos are from starletvintage, a new find on etsy i discovered by chance, and thank god i did, i love her style. these vintage pieces are not only great looking but they aren't too bad pricewise either!

mmm... bliss. I might have to save up and get these.

the dress is a bit more pricey but I have to say, it is hard to think of anything id rather wear than a summer dress with pockets!

This is Craig and I a few weekends ago. The photograph makes me happy. haha. I have no idea what we were doing, but a friend of ours snapped this shot and I think it en-captures our personalities pretty well.

These shoes are 100% vegan and also 100% adorable, they are from the generation's shop on etsy. Plus what a great color! chartreuse/lime is my favorite color, hands down. especially when its paired with a chocolate brown or a deep purple. ahhh.

summer thinkings

1. I have guaranteed summer housing here at school.

2. before i had guaranteed summer housing i applied to house sit for this random woman, who was going away this summer and was offering housing for someone who would agree to watch her cats and water her plants.

I would like the latter to happen.
but then i would need a car.
I dont have a car.

I now have to see if this lady wants me to house sit or not (apparently she has a list of applicants), so that i can decide where im living this summer.
of course the deadline to pull out of on-campus summer housing is this friday. SMCM, as always, has horrible deadlines that never make any sense and are nearly always super inconvenient.

3. far more interesting than any of those things, i casually applied to work part time at a local tattoo shop this summer. of course i do have a lot of time constraints due to classes, but I think it would be a pretty awesome job, i would get to meet cool people, and i would gain some great art experience. I can see my mother freaking out now... "you are NOT working there..."

4. it seems like time is speeding up ultra fast.
Lots of work due this week: IVT zine, Intro drawing naked form sketches, Psych Test, Research Paper, Paradise Lost critical reading assignment, Psych extra credit. I think thats it.
and then this weekend... and the week following, is a mad rush to study for finals. And also a final critique in Drawing, and the distribution of my Zine.
Then finally Finals week, I will hopefully be exempt from the psych exam (as long as i maintain my A), and then only be taking my english exams on the 9th and the 11th.

Then I move all the stuff out of my dorm (and out of craigs house), go back to NJ, get re-certified for life-guarding on the 12 and 13. Then come back to school on the morning of the 14th. possibly babysit for a professor that night, then go to Ross's graduation breakfast and then graduation on the 15th.
Summer classes start on the 17th.

then i will be once again able to breathe. hopefully.

I can't wait for Italy.

la vita intensa

The hectic life.

Oh my god.

Seems like lately i haven't got a moment to breathe. Psych research paper finished last night and handed in. Eleven pages filled with comprehensive research all about the existence of emotions in animals. I worked all night on a project for my Visual Thinking class, creating a handmade book with hand drawn illustrations of Sailboats, and little written descriptions. At the end of the book I've included a list of nautical terms, like

ScuttlebuttThe cask of drinking water on ships was called a scuttlebutt and since Sailors exchanged gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water, scuttlebutt became U.S. Navy slang for gossip or rumors. A butt was a wooden cask which held water or other liquids; to scuttle is to drill a hole, as for tapping a cask, that is the Navy's way of saying "cease smoking"

And then for my Studies of Language class I am working on a final research paper about teaching English as a Second Language, as well as a final portfolio collection of my writing works.

In addition I attended another pre-departure meeting yesterday about my trip to Italy next year, well... this year, in September. And although it heightened my sense of excitement, it also heightened my fear of being robbed in a train station. Ahhh Europe, please be nice to me, I'm new to traveling! Of course in order to be robbed, one must first actually have money (plus i have dreams of getting a nicer camera this summer). Which means... i must find some work, more stress to add to my currently restless mind.

Oh and by the way... its raining.
i don't think the rain is as depressing anywhere else, as it is on the Chesapeake bay.

In honor of me taking a ten second break from working on a hernia...here is a list of things which make me happy.

Raspberry Lemonade

Handmade pizza's (this recipe is from readymade...)
Can't wait to do my own cooking this summer.

Movie nights (cuddling on the futon)
favorite movies: Paulie
About a Boy
Moulin Rouge
Amelie
I <3>

Okay. now, moving on.
I have actually been rather inspired lately, despite going to bed at 3 last night, i stayed up for what was probably another hour thinking about my artwork and the next projects i would like to work on... I am really into the creation of handmade books. More for myself than anyone else...
I have aspirations of working on a book about my grandfathers fruit trees.
My grandmothers gardening, and canning skills.
A friends and family book of recipes (how cliche i know)
and I would also like to take a stab at writing and illustrating my own children's books.
We shall see where these ambitions take me when i get a moment to act on them.

cheers.

Tiggywinkles

Look how adorable! The UK has started printing stamps in support of ten of their threatened creatures. This particular hedgehog is from an animal hospital which is helping British wildlife. The hospitals name? Tiggywinkles. This makes me even more excited for my trip to England next year. smiles. Plus who doesn't love getting mail?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/gallery/2010/apr/13/royal-mail-stamps-uk-mammals?picture=361384781

In other news, I would really like to go to a farmers market.
Its May! its time to go buy some vegetables!
I have to check out localharvest and see what is near by...

Also... school is winding down. two weeks left! (this would be more exciting if i wasn't taking summer classes)

Goals for this week:
- get all my paperwork straightened out for my Alba study trip
- drive to frederick to look at baby mice on thursday
- start putting together my final portfolio for ENG350
- Visit a local farmers market
- find my copy of my drivers history to finish my drivers cert.
- work on my endangered animals zine
- work on my riverboat identification book for IVT

looks like a busy week!

World carnival and stuffs

So friday and saturday have been taken up by World Carnival! Cool!
Basically its a bunch of little performances hired by the school to come and entertain us for two days out on the admissions field. There are also lots of tables of useless little carnival things you can buy, and a moonbounce thing!
my opinion on moonbounce things: they always look like alot of fun but they are usually really hot and there are usually huge guys on them who might crush you, and everyone always ends up with plastic burn.
Anyways, c-men performed (yay boyfriend), and also some indian dancer girls who were really awesome and had beautiful costumes. and apparently there were some steel drummers who i missed (unfortunately) and a lot of other performances. Then at night on friday craig and i went to go watch Donora, the main band, but we missed their performance because we were late and so we saw Black Coffee Experience instead (dont quote me on their name, but i think thats what it was), which was a nice pretty danceable concert, we were standing right next to the speakers though so i pretty much lost all hearing. kidding mom. but it was really loud.
then saturday night we saw True2life, and the cool kids. i liked true to life better than the cool kids because for the opener band there was only like twenty people there, which meant it wasnt so crowded, but then for Cool kids the main band, there was so many people standing up i couldnt see anything and it was really hot and hard to breathe because of all the people packed together and there was no room to dance and i didnt think the band was all that great live.

so then craig and i went to Ross's house and hung out with ross and monica and their appartment-mates and me and monica played ross and craig in beer pong and we BEAT THEM!!!! and it was nice because we were just playing with water and drinking wine, which is obviously so much classier, also im not a big fan of beer. The fact that we won was exciting because i have never even really played beer pong because im horrible at it so i always avoid playing. and we all hung out and ate gross left over food from ross's recital which was like a week ago. haha. and Iain, who was pretty drunk DJed, and played alot of disney songs from beauty and the beast and also that song that is like "hallelujah its raining men" then craig and i played ross and monica at beer pong, and we won, and on the last shot craig and i both shot into the same cup which was pretty epic considering i usually miss the table completely.

pretty good night.
now i have to do work.

monkeys

So.
yesterday.
thursday. drawing class with carrie. it was good but carrie keeps fretting about how they are going to have to drop her summer course, which i am currently enrolled in, because not enough people are signing up. our school kind of sucks with certain things... for example, they are making me take summer courses, but now one of the summer courses might get cancelled, after i carefully scheduled all the classes i could take and fit them into six weeks.
I had a ton of paperwork due for both summer housing, and also for my various study abroad commitments. Which was stressful and terminated in Joanne Goldwater being sarcastic with me and Craig yelling at me for not being more organized about things. I mean hes basically right, im not very organized at all, but i guess i've really never had to be, since i've never done my own "important things".
Anyways and then Craig and I both went to Public Safety to get certified to drive the big vans for saferide because up to this point we have both been "bouncers" and not "drivers"
so I went first and looked utterly stupid because i have never really driven anything other than the little honda, and so i didnt know how to use the shift and things like that. anyways it was really embarrassing, but once i get the rest of my paperwork in for that ill be good to drive state vehicles.
BLAH
then craig and i went to a reading, where the author reads his own work.
that was really inspiring and relaxing and the author was really quite wonderful. hes a professor at a real university (ohio state). Lee K. Abbott
then i worked saferide until 2:30.

And then this morning craig and i skipped psych to go to a brunch with a bunch of Dematha boys and their creative writing professor, one of our english professors, and the author who was still here from the previous night. It was basically a Q and A regarding one of the books which Lee had written and the boys had all read. Craig had fun because the teacher is an old friend of his i suppose. It was funny, they had brought a present for the author, a dematha catholic baseball hat, and they presented it with such ceremony that i had to lean over and whisper to craig "wow, what more could anyone else want besides a Dematha baseball hat?"
I think craig was offended. haha.

then we went to the beach and went kyaking with bob dean, rachel sholtes, and rachels friend, who i dont exactly know the name of. it was really fun and we saw an osprey nest which was nice. then on the ride home i didnt feel like paddling anymore so i attached my kyak to craigs and he towed me back to the docks while i lay in my kyak sunning and reading a book of Lee K Abbotts.

Then we got smoothies, because we had missed lunch, and Craig and I went back to my house and took a family nap with asia, who also happened to be home from her doctors apt, and napping.

now i am getting ready for craigs c-men concert tonight, which is basically going to be our start to the World Carnival, which is some big deal this weekend. Im looking forward to the various bands who are coming and performing!
I hope i love them!
Their names are Cool Kids, and Donora i believe.

anyways i have to go get ready and grab that laundry i did like 8 days ago and forgot to pick up.

cheers!

requiem concert

Lilly Allen- The Fear

I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuck loads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them

And i’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
Cause everyone knows that’s how you get famous
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah I’m on to a winner

[Chorus]
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear

Life’s about film stars and less about mothers
It’s all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn’t matter cause I’m packing plastic
and that’s what makes my life so fucking fantastic

And I am a weapon of massive consumption
And its not my fault it’s how I’m programmed to function
I’ll look at the sun and I’ll look in the mirror
I’m on the right track yeah we're on to a winner

Chorus
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cause I’m being taken over by the fear

[Bridge]
Forget about guns and forget ammunition
Cause I’m killing them all on my own little mission
Now I’m not a saint but I’m not a sinner
Now everything's cool as long as I’m gettin thinner

[Chorus]
I don’t know what’s right and what’s real anymore
I don’t know how I’m meant to feel anymore
When do you think it will all become clear?
‘Cause I’m being taken over by fear

being part of an REI co-op means i get discounts...
